In the Polish capital of Warsaw, the old "10th-Anniversary Stadium" was demolished and a new multi-functional stadium built especially for the 2012 European Championship. The stadium is located on the banks of the Vistula, in the district of Praga, directly opposite the centre of Warsaw.
The stadium and its two underground levels were merged into the existing debris embankment. Not only the access routes but also the geometry and the two access tunnels to the stadium were retained and integrated into the new building.
The Polish capital will host the opening match of EURO 2012 between Poland and Greece. The stadium has a retractable PVC roof making it the only one in which the roof can be closed.
