POOL: The LON communication system

One of the important network systems within building automation

Here you will find basic technical descriptions of the LON bus system functionality which is used by the LABCONTROL volume flow controller.

Technology

The Local Operating Network (LON) is based on distributed intelligent components that communicate with each other through a network for the purpose of jointly implementing a planned function.

The information exchange between components takes place via the globally standardised LON bus with standard network variables. All components are electrically connected via a two-wire line (LON bus). The real exchange of measurement data, types of operation and alarm messages between components connected to the bus takes place in the form of data telegrams. During commissioning, the systems integrator defines the transmission paths (Bindings) using a special software tool.

Controllers based on TCU-LON-II support this technology and can communicate smoothly in a room solution with each other and with components from other manufacturers.

Planning and commissioning

The planning and commissioning of a LON project is typically executed or supported by a system integrator.

His task is to plan the LON network and thus define the structure and required network components (backbone, bridges, routers, repeaters).
The desired functionality within the building is achieved through the use of specialised components such as sensors, controllers and actors. These components are functionally and logically linked to each other using a binding tool such as Echelon LonMaker.

For all components (nodes) in the LON network, there are clear assignments regarding which sender node transmits information such as measurement data, types of operation and alarm messages to which receiver node.
When the system is commissioned, the LON modules are assigned their individual network address and the functional links (bindings) are transferred.

The system integrator can configure the properties of the individual LON components by using special software (LNS Plug-Ins) from the module manufacturer.

TROX LNS Plug-Ins for the LABCONTROL-LON modules are available on request.
